In the words of the influential U.S. journal, “an attractive Sauvignon laced with sweet white peaches, pears and sage. Winemaker Axel Heinz uses some bâttonage, which gives the wine lovely textural depth and richness, even though malolactic fermentation is blocked. Varietal aromatics and flavors are present in the background. Hints of ash, slate and crushed rocks linger on the pointed, nuanced finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. 90 points.”

In the words of this influential U.S. wine guide: “Shows off tons of concentration and sheer depth. Mocha, espresso, dark cherries and plums are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. The 2010 is a decidedly powerful, virile wine endowed with considerable power. The 2010 is a highly promising Serre Nuove. Drink 2017-2027. 93 points.”

The influential U.S. wine guide’s perceptive review: “The 2009 Ornellaia caresses the palate with layers of seamless, radiant fruit. Sweet red berries, mocha, flowers, new leather and spices are some of the many notes that are layered in this sumptuous, totally beautiful wine. The 2009 stands out for its silky tannins and phenomenal overall balance. This is one of those wines that will probably enjoy a long drinking window. There is little question the ability to blend grape varieties was a huge help in this vintage. In 2009 winemaker Axel Heinz used the highest percentage of Cabernet Franc ever in Ornellaia, with the goal of preserving as much freshness as possible. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. 97 points.”

This year, the Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista project celebrates L’Equilibrio as the character of the 2009 vintage. (www.vendemmiadartista.it). Chinese artist Zhang Huan, the 2009 “vintage artist,” was inspired by the famous 6th century BC Chinese philosopher Confucius and entitled his work Questioning Confucius. The steel sculpture, which bears the likeness of the Chinese master, was installed in the centre of the courtyard of the Ornellaia wine cellar.
The artist also designed a limited series of large-format bottles with labels connected conceptually with the sculpture. 100 3-litre Double Magnums bear a label with the philosopher’s face, with a phrase alluding to striving for wisdom that age should bring, while ten 6-litre Imperials are conceived as a series in themselves: they portray Confucius, in increasingly greater size, and with him is a saying that alludes to the attainment now of the wisdom that age brings. Finally, the single 9-litre Salmanazar is adorned with a unique steel sculptural portrait of Confucius. The Sotheby auction house will auction off part of the limited series and the entire proceeds will be donated to the H2 Foundation for Arts and Education, Luo Zhongli Scholarship.
