Rome: Tasting of Masseto and Messorio for Il Clubbino

Under the auspices of the Gelardini and Romani Auction House, the enologists Axel Heinz and Luca D'Attoma led a tasting of four vintages of Masseto and Messorio at the Enoteca Bleve. The 1997, 2001, 2004, and 2006 vintages were chosen to trace the path followed by these two great Italian Merlot Crus. At the tasting were collectors and experts from throughout the world, who have joined il Clubbino, forming a group of experts who will be able to taste different wines every month. "It was not a competition, but rather a meeting," said Axel Heinz, Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia's Enologist, adding, "the tasting revealed two visions and stylistic interpretations of the territory that yields Masseto and Messorio. I found the former to be more powerful and more concentrated, with extremely "aristocratic" tannins, and the latter leaner, and almost "austere." The tasting closed with a very special surprise for the participants, the chance to experience a Magnum of 1979 Petrus.
